Skill and talent names on this page come from creator guides recorded in the launch week. A few are transcription-sensitive and are being checked against the in-game text — where a name is uncertain we flag it inline instead of stating it as fact.

Best for
Players who like calculated, Souls-tempo combat and high-stakes burst windows.

Strengths

  • Controls the flow of combat better than almost any other melee class.
  • Wither detonations delete health bars once the mark is stacked.
  • Built-in super armour, versatile gap closers and pull mechanics for exceptional space control.
  • Genuinely two roles: aggressive Greatsword execution or frontline Polearm & Shield support.
  • A ranged teammate rescue, which no other class has.

Weaknesses

  • Every attack requires commitment — a missed swing is punished hard by fast attackers like Shadowstrix.
  • Slow turn rates and tracking make mid-swing adjustment difficult, so agile players slip behind your shoulder.
  • Naturally vulnerable to kiting if you mismanage gap closers.
  • A steeper learning curve than the Mercenary.

What the 30 July 2026 launch update changed

  • Extended parry counter window.
  • Fixed collision on Thorn Guide, the grapple that pulls enemies into your team’s kill zone.
  • Added an entirely new second weapon path, Polearm & Shield, carrying a unique teammate rescue.
  • A further Polearm & Shield balance pass shipped in the 30 July update.

The Judgment and Wither loop

Everything this class does revolves around applying Wither and consuming it. Landing three light strikes builds Judgment, which infuses your blade and causes your next attack to mark the target with Wither. Land a heavy attack on a Wither-marked target and you consume the mark and execute, applying substantial burst damage. Skills exist to prime Judgment or apply Wither instantly, which matters because it is easy to waste Judgment on an already-withered target if you are not counting swings.

Basic attack mechanics worth drilling

The nuances here are the difference between a novice and a veteran Withered Knight, and none of them are in a tooltip.

  • Landing a heavy attack lets you follow with a double light strike that is far faster than starting a light chain from neutral.
  • A quick-tapped heavy detonates a Wither mark instantly — the practical choice in neutral combat.
  • A fully charged heavy releases two hits for the same energy cost as a single tap, doubling energy efficiency. Save these for stunned, staggered or distracted targets.
  • You only get about four standard heavy strikes before energy bottoms out.
  • Opportunistic Thrust: dodge, then light strike, for a forward dash slash that starts your combo or converts charged Judgment into an active Wither mark.
  • Sprinting Slash: dodge forward into heavy for a leaping spin to chase; dodge backward after heavy for a swift counterattack.
  • Pursuit: heavy into light gives two very fast slashes, putting you at two of the three hits needed for the next Judgment.

Greatsword skills ranked

Slot priority in order. With one slot the answer is not negotiable.

SkillVerdictWhy
ParrySlot 1, non-negotiableFive-second duration, absorbs up to five consecutive hits including red anger attacks. Light branch sweeps Wither onto everyone nearby; heavy branch is a long dash slash that executes a marked target
Radiant RetributionSlot 2Three fast wide slashes with a generous super-armour window through the leap into the third strike — a setup tool and a panic button at once
Breakthrough ChargeSlot 3Second stage curves left or right on light or heavy input, catching opponents who used Breakaway to escape your first hits
Withering MarkSkipRanged Wither application whose projectile is slow enough for competent targets to roll through
Rainbow PiercerWas skippable — recheck itBarely faster than a jog, no super armour, reduced turning radius. But the 30 July patch notes cut its energy cost and cooldown, so the case against it is weaker than at launch

Polearm & Shield skills ranked

The newer path, added at launch, and the one that turns you into a team anchor.

SkillVerdictWhy
Javelin ThrustSlot 1, S-tierInstant long-range Wither plus a rapid gap close. Also your ranged answer to environmental objectives that need to be hit from a distance
Spear BarrageSlot 2, best-in-slot contenderWith the Endless Flow talent you channel it while marching forward as long as energy lasts. No super armour, so wait for a stagger against alert targets
InterveneSlot 3Dash to a low-health or crowd-controlled ally, knockback pulse, and a five-second shield to nearby teammates. Talents add radius, movement speed, execution immunity and a delayed auto-revive
Charge DashSituational, high valueHold to level three for an uninterruptible push. Breakaway instantly boosts your next Charge Dash to level two for super armour on demand — and undocumented, a successful charge executes Wither-debuffed targets
Thorn GuideSituationalPulls an overextended target into your team’s focus fire. With the grappling hook talent it becomes vertical map traversal
Breaker Shield BashFollow-up onlyWide frontal cone applying Wither to everything caught. Has a block property while casting but it is unreliable, and no mobility makes it a poor initiator
Sacred BulwarkGroup play onlyA stationary barrier that absorbs even red anger attacks but breaks under pressure. Immobilises you, so it needs the movement talent, and area damage bypasses it entirely

The talent combo that defines the class

Start at the weapon specialisation tree: Greatsword for three Greatsword slots and one Polearm, Polearm for the reverse, or the balanced route for two each plus reduced cooldowns across all active skills. Then three talents do the heavy lifting. A linked pair in the Greatsword core archetype tree stops executions from consuming Wither, instead extending its duration each time you execute, at the cost of a negligible reduction in execution damage — turning your offence into a continuous execution train. That combos into Righteous Creed from the Knight martial arts tree, which boosts physical damage after a successful execution, so continuous executions mean near-permanent uptime on the buff. If you run Spear Barrage, take Endless Flow.

  • Legacy Gaming’s captions render the linked pair as "Crime" and "Bad Karma"; those two names in particular look transcription-sensitive, so check the in-game tree.
  • The linked debuff also applies additional negative effects every time you refresh Wither.
  • Balanced specialisation is a real option because the cooldown reduction applies to everything.

Affix priorities with numbers

Maximise total health, defence and physical damage. Four affixes matter, and the tier values below are the concrete targets.

AffixTargetEffect
BurstTier 5+25% execution damage. With continuous Wither uptime this is a near-permanent multiplier on your heavy attacks
AegisTier 5, ideally 7+75 defence and +2.5 physical resistance at T5; 105 defence at T7, roughly 10% flat damage mitigation
TenaciousTier 5 minimumSubstantial health plus 7.5% increased healing from all sources — potions, Springhorn and allies
ValorAny setup+7.5% attack unconditionally, plus 1.8% defence penetration at tier 5

Defensive state management

When charging Charge Dash up to level three, holding a full energy bar lets you block a flurry of light attacks or a couple of heavy blows unscathed. Once the charge completes, built-in super armour lets you trade through incoming hits with an uninterruptible knockback and follow-up thrust. But red anger attacks punch straight through the block, so over-relying on the shield against elites will kill you. Knowing when to hold ground versus roll is the class’s real skill check.

Withered Knight FAQ

How does Wither work in Mistfall Hunter?

Three light strikes build Judgment, which makes your next attack apply a Wither mark. Landing a heavy attack on a marked target consumes the mark and executes for substantial burst damage.

What is the best Withered Knight skill?

Parry on the Greatsword — a five-second window that absorbs up to five consecutive hits including unblockable red anger attacks, and branches into either an area Wither application or an executing dash. On Polearm & Shield it is Javelin Thrust.

What affixes should a Withered Knight use?

Burst first for execution damage — 25% at tier five. Then Aegis for defence, Tenacious for health and healing received, and Valor for its unconditional 7.5% attack.

Which Withered Knight skills should I skip?

Withering Mark, because its ranged projectile is slow enough for a competent target to roll through. Rainbow Piercer was the other one to skip — no super armour and barely faster than a jog — but the 30 July patch reduced its energy cost and cooldown, so it is worth retesting rather than writing off.

Is Withered Knight good now?

Yes. It rated near the bottom of beta lists, then the launch update extended its parry window, fixed Thorn Guide and added the entire Polearm & Shield path. Early launch guides now call it the most balanced all-round class in the game.
