Mistfall Hunter Chaos Mercenary Build (Sword & Shield)
Firebox’s Chaos-difficulty Mercenary: the sword-edge stack line, shield dash and slam as mobility rather than defence, and the on-camera case for why blocking talents got cut.

What it does
The premise
The highest-viewed Chaos-specific loadout, and the newest build on this site — recorded 7 August, one day after the live update. Its organising decision is negative: this is a sword-and-shield Mercenary that has stopped building around the shield. Blocking talents were tried on camera and cut mid-video, because “so many classes have damage that goes straight through your block, or it just takes so much energy away it doesn’t really feel worth it.” What remains treats the shield’s two skills as mobility, and stacks the sword-edge line for damage.
The loop
- Build sword-tip stacks through the sword-edge line — skills feed stacks, stacks unlock the four-hit momentum string, and blade charge pays damage for staying in the edge states.
- Shield Dash and Shield Slam are movement, not defence: the dash stuns on a successful block mid-dash, the slam casts quickly from a block, and both exist to reach ranged classes.
- Hammer is carried for exactly one talent — dash distance — as a third gap-closer against Blackarrow and Sorcerer.
- Raging earth shake stuns and slows whatever it catches, which is the window the sword string wants.
Skills
Skill slots, and what is deliberately left out
Half of the mobility pair. With Rising to the Challenge, blocking during the dash stuns the enemy — an engage that punishes the counter-swing.
- Shield Slam?01:30
The other half — “relatively mobile”, and with the Bounce talent it casts quickly out of a block.
Tried and dropped: “I just don’t really feel like it’s working very well right now”, including its forward-movement talent. His own PvP footage agrees — “I don’t think my breaker slash came in handy at all.”
Talents
Talents in the creator's stated priority order
Listed in the order they recommend spending points, not in tree order — the first entries are the ones that change how the build functions rather than how hard it hits.
- Sword edge?02:00
Sword attacks from skills grant a sword-tip stack — the red-sword state that unlocks the four-hit momentum string.
- Blade charge?02:30
Sword and shield damage increases while in the edge states — the payoff for the stacking the rest of the tree does.
- Stacking blade?02:30
Cuts the sword-tip requirement for the edge states to four, which is what makes the loop cycle inside one engagement.
A successful block during Shield Dash stuns the enemy player — the build’s one remaining use of blocking, attached to movement.
The last hit of Shield Dash reduces its cooldown — “we really need it for range classes.”
- Hammer dash distance?03:00
The one hammer talent carried, purely for added gap-closing range against Blackarrow and Sorcerer.
Affixes
Affixes to chase
- Aegis01:00
Defence, first named.
- Stoic01:30
Defence plus the low-health heal.
- Valor01:30
The damage slot.
- Seeker01:30
Movement speed on hit, “so we can keep up with range classes — that is our hardest matchup.”
- Elusive01:30
More dodge economy, for the same ranged-matchup reason as Seeker.
- Resilience01:30
Against stuns and freezes — “really strong, I would say a must-take affix.”
- Vitality01:30
Energy for more skill casts.
Execution
The parts that are technique, not gear
Copying the talent tree gets you none of this. These are the patterns the creator demonstrates on camera.
The blocking experiment, run on camera 03:30
He entered the video with Opportunist (move speed while blocking) and Resilient Body (Indomitable Will while blocking), and removed both between fights: “I don’t think I actually have time to use it in fights”, and Bulwark “doesn’t really do anything… everyone has true damage.” The build page keeps the experiment because the negative result is the finding.
Three gap closers, one job 03:00
Shield Dash, Shield Slam and the lengthened hammer dash all point at the same problem: Blackarrow and Sorcerer. Against melee the sword string carries; the entire mobility budget is spent on reaching the classes that will not come to you.
The tier comment worth keeping 07:30
Mid-footage, he revises his own rating: Mercenary “might actually be closer to A tier” now — where he had it at B because “Black Arrow bunny hop completely countered you”, and that side-dodge tech is patched. One creator’s live revision, recorded the day after the patch.
Honest limits
What this build is bad at
A build page without this section is an advertisement.
- The hardest matchups are named plainly: other ranged classes — Blackarrow above all, and Sorcerer. Three of seven affixes and most of the mobility exist just to survive that.
- Blocking — the stance’s identity — is judged not worth building around on the current patch. If a blocking pass ships, this build’s premise is the first thing to retest.
- Stone Breaker Slash is dropped on feel, with his own footage as the evidence; a reader who likes the skill is disagreeing with the source, not with this page.
- A gear code exists in his description but is not reproduced here — codes rot, and the description was not captured with the transcript.
