Quick loadout
Choose the third slot by deployment
Javelin Thrust and Spear Barrage stay fixed. The final card changes with the job.
Trio: Intervene turns the flex slot into ally protection and repositioning.
Slot 1Ranged openerJavelin Thrust
The creator’s essential first slot: reach, impact and an opening for the polearm pressure loop.

What it does
The premise
A launch-version Polearm & Shield setup taken from Legacy Gaming’s full Withered Knight class guide. The recommendation is not a claim that polearm was the strongest competitive stance: it is the creator’s own three-skill loadout for players choosing this path, centred on ranged initiation, a sustained spear channel and a context-dependent utility slot.
The loop
- Open at reach with Javelin Thrust and use its impact to create the first clean commitment.
- Convert the opening into Spear Barrage, the repeated pressure skill the creator calls the polearm’s bread and butter.
- Use Intervene as the third slot in a trio to reach and protect an ally.
- When deploying alone, replace the ally-dependent flex slot with Charge Dash for self-directed movement.
Skills
Skill slots, and what is deliberately left out
The creator later calls this the essential single-slot choice for polearm: a long-reaching thrust that gives the stance a way to begin pressure before committing to the channel.
The core multi-hit channel and the creator’s bread-and-butter pick. It supplies control and mob clear, but committing to the channel leaves you exposed when the target can interrupt or disengage.
Our solo swap for the source loadout’s ally-dependent third slot. The source demonstrates the movement tool earlier in the class guide; unlike Intervene, it does not need a teammate to create distance or a new angle.
Talents
Talents in the creator's stated priority order
Listed in the order they recommend spending points, not in tree order — the first entries are the ones that change how the build functions rather than how hard it hits.
- Secondary Specialisation17:49
The polearm specialization branch. The creator begins here before moving into the shared Withered Knight wither and cooldown lines.
Adds a physical-damage window after execution so the next polearm sequence benefits from the wither payoff.
- Endless Flow18:56
The cooldown-speed choice that directly supports the creator’s plan to cycle Spear Barrage as the stance’s repeatable pressure tool.

Execution
The parts that are technique, not gear
Copying the talent tree gets you none of this. These are the patterns the creator demonstrates on camera.
Pick one self-sufficient slot before queueing solo 16:50
The source’s final loadout summary names Javelin Thrust and Spear Barrage as the polearm core, then adds Intervene for its group value. Our mode switch makes that dependency visible: the trio card is source-recommended, while Charge Dash is the explicit solo replacement rather than a claim that Intervene works without an ally.
Do not read a shield as passive safety 03:50
Polearm & Shield charges a counterattack through its guard rhythm. The stance asks you to time a response and then resume pressure; simply holding the shield does not turn it into a permanent survival stance.
Honest limits
What this build is bad at
A build page without this section is an advertisement.
- The source is a 31 July launch guide, not a competitive retest after the 12 August balance pass. Any affected skill is flagged above with its new change.
- Spear Barrage is a committed channel. The source warns that it can be interrupted and does not give you a universal safe window.
- Intervene is valuable because another player exists. In solo deployment its target requirement is a real dead-slot risk, which is why the interactive loadout swaps it out.
- This page records one creator’s Polearm & Shield recommendation; it does not erase the launch tier lists that rated the stance below Greatsword for solo play.
