The gate is the build brief
Mistfall Hunter does not gate difficulty behind rarity. Each map and difficulty states a number — the combined Gyldenblod value of what you have equipped, shown in the equipment hub directly above your gear set — and crossing it opens the queue. That single fact is what makes a budget build a real category rather than a compromise: you are not building the best kit you can afford, you are building the cheapest kit that clears a specific line.
- A full green set adding up to 800 clears Chaos. It does not need a single blue piece, and this is the single most common misunderstanding about the game's difficulty.
- Clearing the gate does not soften the lobby. Matchmaking appears to weigh what you bring, so a minimum kit tends to meet other minimum kits.
- The gates do not rank the way their names suggest — Brandrgarde Normal asks 300 while Hallowgrove Chaos asks 800. Check the ordering in your own client.
| Map and difficulty | Published entry rule | What that means for a budget |
|---|---|---|
| Hallowgrove — Normal | Starting gear capped at Excellent (blue) | A ceiling rather than a floor. Nothing to build towards |
| Brandrgarde — Normal | 300 value, starting gear no better than Epic (purple) | The cheapest gate with a floor at all |
| Hallowgrove — Chaos | Equipment value at or above 800 | The gate worth building for. Rarity is not part of the rule |
| Brandrgarde — Cataclysm | Equipment value at or above 2,500 | The second target, and where the blue kits land |

Three kits, priced by one creator, landing on the published numbers
The clearest budget source of the launch fortnight prices the same Shadowstrix glass-cannon build three times over and saves each as a loadout preset. The preset names are the giveaway, because they are budgets rather than builds: "800 Green Budget", "2.5k DPS Burst", "8k Purp Glass Cannon". Two of those three numbers are difficulty gates. The kits were not built to a budget in the abstract; they were built to a door.
- The green kit is named for the gate, not for its own cost: the Equipment Value on screen reads 866 and the Total Expense 907. Aim at 800 and you land a little over it, which is the point — the gate is a floor.
- Equipment Value and Total Expense are different numbers and only the first one opens the queue. The build sheet above the gear set is the one to read.
- One creator, one build, three price points — treat this as a shape that matches the published gates, not as an average across the playerbase.
- The strategic claim attached to the green kit is that it profitably hunts blue kits in Chaos. That is the creator's read of the lobby and is graded as such.
- A second creator published an independent budget Shadowstrix loadout in the same week, framed as a teaching build, which is why this class leads the page rather than because it is cheapest by nature.

What the cheap kits actually run
Budget kits converge on movement and damage and skip defence, for the obvious reason: defensive affixes buy survival you can also buy by not being hit, and survival is the expensive half of a gear set. Every core below is one named creator's launch-build loadout, and the skill and talent names carry the standing caveat above.
- The Shadowstrix row is the one to trust most: those four affixes and their levels are visible in the client on screen, where the commentary around them garbles at least one name. Where a capture and a caption disagree, the capture wins.
- Elusive and Seeker appear in every budget core here. Movement is the affix budget kits refuse to cut.
- The Mercenary source abandons Resilient Body, Opportunist and Bulwark on camera, because too many classes carry damage that goes straight through a block. A budget kit cannot afford a defensive layer that does not work.
- Spinning Slash is called near-mandatory on Shadowstrix for the super armour it grants while engaging, which is what lets a squishy kit commit at all.
| Class | Affix core | Skills | The talent that defines it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shadowstrix (green, 866) | Fervor Lv.4, Elusive Lv.3, Fervid Lv.2, Aegis Lv.1 — read off the affix panel, not the commentary | Shadow Strike, Flash Stride, Spinning Slash, Phantom Shift | Battle Frenzy for PvP physical piercing; Wound Buildup instead if you are running PvE |
| Mercenary | Aegis, Stoic, Valor, Seeker, Elusive, Resilience, Vitality | Shield Dash and Shield Slam, both for mobility | Sword Edge into Blade Charge — and the creator drops the block-focused talents mid-video, which is the more useful finding |
| Withered Knight | Double Ethereal on boots, square gems in helmet and trousers, Ethereal from the wine vendor | Built around Rainbow Piercer cooldown windows | None. The build is a movement package, not a damage tree |

The build that is cheap by design rather than by compromise
One Withered Knight loadout deserves separating out because it inverts the premise. Its damage does not come from gear at all — it comes from the map. The kit stacks Ethereal for fall-damage immunity, then the player baits opponents into chasing and knocks them off ledges, taking the fall themselves without consequence. The gear bill is low because the gear is not doing the killing. The creator titles it a 500-gold build; no cost breakdown appears on screen, so that figure is their stated ceiling rather than a measured total.
- The stated assembly is a square gem in the helmet, a square gem in the trousers, and double Ethereal on the boots, topped up with Ethereal from the wine vendor.
- It only works from a genuine edge — the creator is explicit that any sliver of ledge left to land on defeats the whole play.
- It is a PvP-only proposition and a slow one, built around selling the impression that you are a bad player worth chasing. Rated here as a technique with a real ceiling, not a farming kit.
Why a green kit is not a handicap in Chaos
The instinct is that a harder difficulty is a worse place to be poor, and it is backwards here for a social reason rather than a mathematical one. The strong players who queue Chaos concentrate on the bosses, the Mist Lord and the middle of the map. That leaves the outside quieter than it is on Normal, while the loot pool carries substantially more purples, legendaries and Holy items. An 800 green set buys access to the better pool at a stake you can afford to lose.
- Safe-pocket the best finds. A couple of epics has already covered the set several times over.
- The 800 is a key, not a stake — a point the gold-farming ledger makes with a filmed run rather than an argument.
- If gear fear is what is keeping you on Normal, the cheapest fix is a set built to exactly 800 rather than a better set built slowly.
