Mistfall Hunter vs Dark and Darker vs Dungeonborne

The honest comparison: what Mistfall Hunter genuinely does differently from Dark and Darker and Dungeonborne, where it is unproven, and why the retention question matters more than the combat question.

Short answer

Play it for the combat: third-person, stance-swapping and free-aim, which is a genuinely different game from Dark and Darker’s first-person dungeon crawl. Be sceptical about longevity — that is the axis on which this genre’s previous entries have failed, and Mistfall Hunter has not yet been tested on it.

Where this is being asked · It is one of the most common questions on the Steam board, usually phrased as "why play this over Dark and Darker".

§01

The differences that are real

These are structural rather than matters of taste, and they are what a player moving from another extraction game will notice first.

  • Perspective: Mistfall Hunter is third-person over-the-shoulder with free aim. Dark and Darker is first-person. This changes spacing, peeking and how melee reads at close range more than any stat comparison would.
  • Class kits: skills are attached to your weapon stance rather than your character, and you carry two stances swappable mid-fight — so a class is effectively two kits. Neither comparison game does this.
  • Death: a monster or mist kill puts you in Soul Form and you can walk back to your body and revive. Only a player kill is unrecoverable. That is meaningfully softer than the genre norm, and it is the single most misreported fact about this game.
  • Cost: it is a paid product at $24.99 standard and $39.99 Deluxe, not free-to-play.
§02

The part nobody can answer yet

Extraction games in this specific medieval-fantasy niche have repeatedly launched to strong reception and then struggled to hold players. That is the honest risk, and it is the one a launch-week review cannot settle. What is knowable is the developers’ stated cadence: seasons are intended to last three to four months, a pure PvE mode is in development, and there is no duo queue in the short term.

  • The launch itself was not the problem — over 100,000 players in the first eight hours, per the official 30 July post.
  • The open questions are the ones raised on our matchmaking and EU server pages, both of which affect whether a new player’s second week is as good as their first.
  • Anyone telling you now whether this game retains players in six months is guessing.
§03

A fair way to decide

If you bounced off Dark and Darker because first-person melee felt unreadable, the perspective change alone is worth trying. If you bounced off the genre because losing everything felt punitive, note that only player kills are unrecoverable here — that is a real difference, not marketing. If you left because lobbies felt hostile to newcomers, read the matchmaking answer first, because that concern is not yet resolved in this game either.

Expiry condition

What would have to change for this answer to be wrong

An answer about a live-service game without this is an answer with a hidden expiry date.

The retention question resolves either way over the first two seasons, and the pure PvE mode ships — that mode in particular would change who this game is for.

Evidence

Every source, with its date

A complaint posted before 30 July 2026 describes the playtest, not the game you bought. Those are flagged rather than quietly mixed in.

Related questions

It is a different game rather than a strictly better one. Third-person free aim, two swappable weapon stances per class and recoverable PvE deaths are real mechanical differences. Whether it retains players longer is genuinely unknown and anyone claiming otherwise this early is guessing.
